I'd ask how much the "repair charges" are to put their software back on their drives. It has to be less than what they want to extort.

Update: The more I think about this, the more it grinds my beans. They created the problem, not you. They are responsible for the security hole. I'm betting that one year ago they had not even thought of taking advantage of this income opportunity. They are exploiting the fact that it became public and people got scared. It just stinks.

One more thought. Wipe the drives. Report that the machines have stopped working and ask for field service to repair them. Then dump the company when the contract expires. That's playing dirty, but they started it.
